I bit the bullet and purchased a DJI Phantom. You can get 'em for as low as $650. I added a set of prop guards and 2 extra batteries to the order.
The Phanotm is really cool. With the built-in GPS, it will fly back to the 'home' location if you happen to lose contact between the TX and RX. I stuck a small inexpensive 1.2gHz camera on it for my first attempt at FPV (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I'm looking at another pre-built quad that cost as little as a scratch built kit (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) (Storm-Drone4) Very cool at only $360.
