I purchased a 911 magnesium engine case that has an odd serial number seeming authentically stamped in the correct place. 3180259. The case is a 1R series casting number. Any way to check this number out? Thanks! Brad

Probably a replacement engine that had a blank number plate. There were no mag cases in 68. The dealer installing it probably just put the original engine number on there.

I've seen a few aluminum cases in 1968, and a few magnesium cases in 1968
it was a transition year... probably the mag motors were later in the year

my race car has a 1972 7R case that was MFI
the 7R cases were all supposed to be 1973.5 CIS cars
but I think when the motor cases switched production they went into the assembly line no matter the model year... same thing as the aluminum to magnesium motors.
