Pulled the 1.7L out of my 1972 914 the other day to chase down some issues ive been having trying to get the engine to turnover properly. and being the freedom loving harley davidson riding american i am (also with constant shit getting i recieve from my roommates) we've been throwing the idea of using an Aircooled V-twin 100cu in plus Harley engine as a powerplant to reduce weight and add power and i can't help to ask why haven't i seen this yet.

so far our idea is build a Flange on the Crank that bolts to an aluminum flywheel then the 914 transmission...

I'm open to ideas and criticism... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/flag.gif)

My best guess would be because those engines were not built to schlepp around a 2000+ lbs car.

What does the torque curve look like on one of those? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

I would hate to have to sidestep the clutch at 8000 rpm every time i want to get going ...

And that's a pretty good guess, I'd say. All the cars I've ever seen with motorcycle engines are exceptionally light, unlike the 914. Although some of those big ol' Harley riders, two up, do probably come close to that 2000 lb. barrier.

And as a heads-up I just read about the adaptation of the S&S engine to the new Morgan, and they found that the torque pulses from the big V-Twin hammered the drive train so much it broke things. They ended up using a rubber coupler between the engine and transmission to soften the blows.
