Sellers information: FOR SALE: PORSCHE 914-6, based on an ORIGINAL PORSCHE 914-6 with its body replaced in the eighties by a 914-4 one. The original body was damaged in an accident and replaced with great care by another body of the same year and color. Otherwise this car is a completely original 6-cilinder with all its details. The condition of the car is excellent. An unique opportunity to get a real 914-6 for an interesting budget instead of paying prices near € 125.000,-. You will also find this car on the cover and pages of the Porsche 914 book "Caught by Camera". If you have questions please contact us at e-mail. Priced at: 47,950 EUR 51,490 USD http://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/details....mp;pageNumber=1 |

I am going to weigh in on this, though I am by no means an expert on the topic. If they took every single part out of the 914-6 and transferred it to an identical shell from a 914-4, it would be akin to buying a replacement shell from Porsche due to accident damage.
There isn't enough detail to determine the extent of the parts that were transferred, but if they really wanted to push it, they could transfer the VIN plates as well, though I am sure it would be considered illegal, even if the original VIN was never reported as totaled. If you had a 914-6 that was in an accident, and you had to replace a bunch of sheet metal, and used replacements from a used 914-4, does that no longer make the car a true 914-6? It may have a blemished history, but seems no different than taking a 914-6 that is completely rusted out and replacing metal with new parts from Restoration Design. I think the whole "originality" issue goes to another level once cars start to approach crazy high values. Jim |
