In putting Mark's engine back in and replacing the broken accelerator cable. It seems the cable isn't quite long enough to work/fit correctly. In the FI arrangement the cable crosses the engine at 45 degrees. In dual carbs it needs to come at the bar at 90 degrees. Which pulls the bowden out of the firewall. Which will allow water down the cable tube.

What have others done to work around this ?

Somd914,

I’m sorry you feel the thread was hi jacked and turned into a white paper on linkages.
That wasn’t my intent at all.
It was driven that way by persistent pressure on me to justify myself, my comments and experience.
Granted I came over the hill from nowhere into this thread and vocally listed the deficiencies in the linkages on the market, in the viewpoint of an engineer.
I fully accept initially that the majority who posted took offence at this.

My intent was to be helpful. (Ok tin hat on here again for the retort) buried in this thread is some good information despite the flack.

Cary’s OP was…

“In putting Mark's engine back in and replacing the broken accelerator cable.

What have others done to work around this ?”

Cary asked “What have others done to work around this ?”

Well I came in after several pictures had been posted by others showing their set ups, and SA-914 was having problems too.

“This is what I have so far. But the pedal feels like it's in a bind.” said SA-914

I’d had exactly the same experiences with Type IV engines in the past and recently on my 914 where I had tried two types of suppliers linkages and knew straight away from his picture that SA-914 had an alignment set up issue. I could also see that the cable connection on his linkage was made for a cable set at 90 degrees not 45 degrees which is what Cary had expressed issues with on his very first post.

In my first post I came in (albeit heavy as you perceive) but posted a link (that I'd taken 2 hours out of my day to write) to show SA-914 how I’d overcome this and a drawing I’d made showing him where his linkage was set in his photo and where it should be.

I also posted a whole list on cable running issues including solutions for both Cary and SA-914

Somd914 you say…

“Darren, sorry, you contributed nothing but destructive criticism and egotistical novellas” and repeat…” My point is that this thread was not about linkage design enhancements it was about helping those in requesting assistance with what they have, known systems that work.”

I kinda don’t know how to answer the statement you’ve made Somd914, maybe you got hung up in the perceived personal lambasting that was going on? I don't know, so I’ll leave it with what I said above as it will otherwise keep going around in circles which Rhodyguy seems to want.

Again you think I also shredded Chris without cause? I didn’t shred anyone or their reputation just the linkage, I didn’t know it was even a guy called Chris who made it when I posted (remember I am a relative newbie on here and 8000 miles away from the majority of you guy's). This is where I think people have taken offence and the thread has ended up running away at a tangent.

You also say..

"Being an engineer and a team lead for many years. I've seen personalities like this tear apart many good engineering teams".

Then I am afraid to tell you that it's a failure of the team leader and above them the team manager in both their abilities to lead or manage individuals, not the personality clashes in the team that needs improvement. I find that some of the most opinionated individuals are the best team performers if you manage them correctly. Equally you need to encourage and motivate those who wouldn't say boo to a goose, to express their opinions. (As you didn't specifically state the leader was you, my response is not aimed at you or intended to offend you)

Bandjoey,

Thanks for seeing some of my perspective here.

'Look at all the various methods, and pick the one you like' you say.
I agree, totally and had said before you…
“Look at ALL (not just one suppliers) 914 carb linkage kits, cable routes and general engineering quality and decide which one is for you”

I’d love to show my car collection but as on most occasions in the past you get too many envious guys taking offence and a pop at you just because of what you have, not how you got it. But if ever you’re over here in UK, call me, we can take a day off and walk around, talk cars and maybe drive a few of your choice.

Funny enough before logging on this evening to see if the embers had died down, I washed the 14 after going out racing at Goodwood with my good friend Nick Faure, British Motor Racing driver and Porsche enthusiast. We had a great day catching up on old times and while tearing the arse out of his very first pre-production Works 968 CS it was very luckily on a quick fluids check to notice the timing belt was fraying. So to avoid costly failure the car was recovered back to our mutual friends garage where I helped off load while Nick admired my 914.

Bananaman,

I’m quite a newbie here myself, venturing out of my Build off-challenge thread into other area’s of this forum. Granted I have strong opinions, this has certainly been an interesting experience; but if any single contributor to this thread has been unhelpful, abusive and personal while continuing to perpetuate the hate and bait, it has to be you.
Just my observation of course..plus my Bananaman model is less crude, rude and much better engineered than yours by the way. :- )
Love and peace, love and peace
