The stock cable worked on mine. It went straight into the cross-pin. Not sure what that extra piece is that you show currently stuck into the cross-pin, I think it just needs to be removed.

I think your're right, but the set screw to remove the extra piece (old ferrule?) is completely rounded out. Also, if I did get it removed, I still would not be able to pass the cable through the next piece (the cylinder with the set screw) unless there is not ferrule. Very odd setup by previous owner.
I'm thinking of leaving it as is, snipping the ferrule off of my new cable and running the cable through the cylinder piece and calling it a day. The stock cable worked on mine.
