So I am a new 914 owner ( 1973) - car is running, but the clutch will not engage. Last owner said they thought the linkage was broken - but in looking under the car, the rod is moving just fine from shifter back to transmission. As I am poking around today I notice this cable end out near the rear / firewall. Is this my clutch cable? I think it is, but confused where the rest ended up.. and... where should I look/ repair for this? THANK YOU! ![]() |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) That's one of the heater duct pull cables.
Your clutch cable is the thick one with the plastic protector on it, seen just "above" your thumb in the first photo. If your clutch isn't fully engaging (disengaging the transmission), it could be that the cable isn't tight enough...or that the clutch tube has broken free of its mounts in the tunnel...or that there's not enough "throw" in the throwout arm. My engine drop video (in the playlist you can access through the link in my signature) shows how the clutch cable is attached. If the cable is loose, try tightening it. If it doesn't seem to get tight even after many turns of the nuts, you probably have a broken clutch tube. Very common. Google "914world broken clutch tube" and you'll find lots of good info. Or...is the problem that you can't get the car into gear? Best of luck and (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png) |
