So I am a new 914 owner ( 1973) - car is running, but the clutch will not engage. Last owner said they thought the linkage was broken - but in looking under the car, the rod is moving just fine from shifter back to transmission. As I am poking around today I notice this cable end out near the rear / firewall. Is this my clutch cable? I think it is, but confused where the rest ended up.. and... where should I look/ repair for this? THANK YOU! ![]() |

1. You push the clutch pedal down to disengage the engine from the transmission. I hear that mistake a lot.
The natural position of the clutch pressure plate is clamping the clutch disc. The cable (via the clutch pedal) pulls back on the clutch release arm, which pivots on a ball and pushes forward on the pressure plate springs to release the clutch disc. The flywheel and the pressure plate rotate with the engine. The clutch disc is splined to the transmission input shaft. When your foot is off the clutch pedal, all 3 are clamped together as one, and the engine drives the input shaft. When you push the pedal down, the pressure plate releases its grip on the disc, and you can shift gears, or sit at a stop with the engine running. I hope that's not too long-winded. Now. What EXACTLY is your car doing? No gears? Grinding gears? Or car will not move? |
