Another $52 Blunder, Stoddard Exhaust Paint NOT Correct Color Options

Ok, here we go again. I already posted the story about the cost of the paint and shipping. So paint came in this afternoon. Had parts prepped for paint, did a spray out of two coats. Paint is NOT the correct color. I have several NOS exhaust pieces and they are all the same color as heater duct piece shown.

Piece 1 is with stock gray VHT 900* from Home Depot

Piece 2 is two coats of Stoddard Exhaust paint

Piece 3 is NOS stock color

I think the local paint store might be able tomix up you something better

I wonder how exact Porsche's color spec was on the paint. And if your NOS part darkened with age. Why not paint the parts with the paint you got and they all match. No one but you will know.

reckon stoddards have it pretty right.
can remember getting VW exhaust pieces back in early 80s.
mid grey like stoddards.
NOS parts are half a century old. paint changes color with time.
parts have aged just like cars.

angst over restoration has to be in perspective.
reference parts are not fresh parts.

folks who restore paintings can tell you about it.
sistine chapel ceiling turned into a muddy turgid dark thing over 3 centuries.
but when michelangelo painted it first up, was very bright.

can tell you grey does one of two things, depending on the base used to mix it.
if its a white base it fades over time to white.
if its out of a black base it darkens over time to black.
the pigments fade out.

i can only find the original phoenix red on my car on the inners.
and boy is it lurid.
the outside still looks bright and 70s but its half way to faded and gone out of the world.
