In the late 60's-70's the Western States ( NM, CO, SD, WY) had unrestricted speed limits. As long as you did not get too stupid and there was not any traffic you could haul ass all day long at a 100 with out any problem.

Montana had a "reasonable and prudent" law before AND AFTER the federal 55 mph limit until 1999. Locals like to blame maniac out of state drivers for abusing the law and causing it to disappear. In reality, the MT Supreme Court struck it down as too subjective to be fairly enforced. Passing through when the law was in place, I saw plenty of vehicles with MT tags driving anything BUT reasonable or prudent. Moving here a couple years after speed limits had been instated, the locals still seemed to have extremely heavy right feet. One day while driving the legal 70 mph on the Interstate, I car passed me such a speed I got curious how fast they were driving and decided to try to pace them. My old truck started shaking at 95 mph as the car continued to get smaller in the windshield. Just as I decided to back off, another car whizzed past me like I was standing still, quickly overtook the first speeder, and dissipated over the horizon. Soon after, I told that story to a co-worker who is 5th generation Montanan. He reminded me that only two years before, you could theoretically drive down the highway at 150 mph while swigging whiskey from a bottle and a loaded gun hidden under your seat and not break a single law. Of course we also had among the highest per capita traffic fatality rate and drunk driving accident rate in the country. That kind of freedom sounds fun, but the reality is quite different. |
