Is a 1.7 ECU brain compatible with a 2.0 engine?

No, not really. The real key is to match ECU with it's corresponding MPS. Check this link:

https://members.rennlist.com/pbanders/DJetParts.htm

About 2/3 way down page you'll see an ECU/MPS compatibly table. There's also info on correct part numbers by year.
