I have a 72 914 that I have been working on forever, started a rebuild 15 years ago. A local machinist help me out and somehow the engine that I thought was a little bigger then 2.1L, I now calculate the size at 2366 cc (103mm x 71mm)! It has an electronic vacuum advance distributor and Solex H32/34 PD513 carbs, compression is 150 psi plus or minus 2 psi all around. Engine starts instantly warm or cold, rev's sluggishly but will quickly get to 6000 rpm easily. The issue is it will not idle below 2200 rpm.
What have I missed? |

Opening up the airflow and removing the paper should help somewhat. But, if he is able to keep the heads cool using 103s AND 10.5:1 compression, I think there was enough air moving to cool the oil as well. I think the issue of using a 30mm pump and overwhelming the cooler bypass was still the primary issue. Curios to know how long the receipt was in there though.
In my case I used an aux fan assisted oil cooler under the rear trunk instead of going to the smaller pump. Let us know how the engine does on longer drives? The smaller pump will hopefully help get oil temps down - I want to know how your heads are doing as you start taking longer drives where you have to start dealing with heat soak. I'm sure you know what you are doing, but 10+:1 is a LOT of compression for a T4. I ran 9.2:1 on my 2056 for a while and had hot heads on longer drives and eventually lowered the compression to 8.6:1. Now it runs really cool. Thanks! Zach |
