Need help again. I found out my car was originally from California. Any indication of smog equipment is gone. So how is the smog pump mounted to front of the engine? I've seen the parts and would like to see an engine with this installed.
Thanks, DaveB |

relax dave.
all cars in the USA had to move towards using unleaded fuel. you have to have unleaded fuel for cats. unleaded comes in first in 1973 in cal. then 74 in rest of USA. its just to get ready for cats. on its own it does nothing for emissions but cats don't tolerate lead. its all staged. removing lead is separate from cutting NOx. but it is related to other emissions. remove lead, install cat as a result, deal with CO and unburnt hydrocarbons with cat. they did unleaded by lowering compression. thats it, lead dealt with. move on. NOx, CO and hydrocarbons a separate matter. to deal with CO and hydrocarbons you needed a cat (early 2 way cat). its a grand plan, year by year, step by step. NOx is dealt with purely by retarded timing. every farkin car in america had to go to unleaded. not just 914s. california first and then the rest of your great sprawling nation. and..........after that the rest of the world. thats why you f$ckers landed on the moon ......not the russians. thats why i like you lot. ...the point is porsche used EFI and a few other analogue adjustments to make it through emissions from 74 to 75. my question to you is what are trying to do/ a technological restoration/reconstruction or what? just work out what you are wanting to achieve and.......... let us know. but if you thought it was a simple as a smog pump think again. not being nasty. it would be a real job to bring back a 75 1.8 cal spec. and you got to ask yourself why. and if you say, just because. well thats a good reason. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) ----------- or here is the idiots guide to cleaning up the air in the 1970s galaxy. in shorthand by a f$%kwit from somewhere north of the south pole. step1. we have to put catalysts on cars! first promoted i understand by a genius in GM around 1969. someone can fill in the details if i am wrong. step 2. some jostling about cats from ford, gm and chrysler. but all agree, yep way to to. step 3. we can't have lead in petrol if we have cats. step 4. EPA says, ok lets delete lead. ummm, how do we do that given there is x thousands of oil refineries and x millions of gas stations with fuel pumps and gas tanks underground etc. step 5. we will work it out. step 6. smart alecs in california put up their hands and say we are first, we have a smog problem, give us special powers. us congress says ok, you have special powers. go first. step 7. this summary is bs because i left out other stuff about vapor emission controls etc. but. steo 8 = point 1. unleaded fuel was going to have to happen to close the end game with cats. step 9. california 1.8 is the end result of germans saying we have a piddle arse tiny little air cooled no nothing flat 4 we cannot afford to lose horsepower from so here it is. and they did it. lower compression runs on unleaded. got all your clean gear on it. and its still cranking at 76 hp. pretty close to 80 hp leaded high compression 1.7 dating from 1970. its all good. |
