I have a 72 914 that I have been working on forever, started a rebuild 15 years ago. A local machinist help me out and somehow the engine that I thought was a little bigger then 2.1L, I now calculate the size at 2366 cc (103mm x 71mm)! It has an electronic vacuum advance distributor and Solex H32/34 PD513 carbs, compression is 150 psi plus or minus 2 psi all around. Engine starts instantly warm or cold, rev's sluggishly but will quickly get to 6000 rpm easily. The issue is it will not idle below 2200 rpm.
What have I missed? |

Well I finally broke down and pulled the engine to replace the oil pump. Hopefully I will fix my hot oil issue with less oil flow volume so the oil cooler gets to do it's job. But wait as I'm dragging the engine across the garage floor on the floor jack I notice a receipt stuck in the impeller! 40% of the impeller was blocked. Anyway I purchased an 26 mm Type 1 pump modified for Type 4's from AA Products it fits very well, had to lightly tap it into place.

Common problem, order the plastic fan grill for a T4 powered VW Bus ,then you can forget the issue for ever. Not an expensive part considering the cost to rebuild a cooked motor...…. Good luck. |
