Other than drain the transmission, add magnetic drain plug, flush, and refill we didn't open it but there is a slight leak coming from the side shifter linkage.

Is the cover intended to catch this leak or is something not right?

there is an o-ring on the cover/housing...
you can pull it and replace or not worry too much..
either way.
