Other than drain the transmission, add magnetic drain plug, flush, and refill we didn't open it but there is a slight leak coming from the side shifter linkage.

Is the cover intended to catch this leak or is something not right?

Plan replacing the ball cup bushing while you’re in there. Take the time to do the rest of the bushings too. You will need 2 new set screws. Typically a one time use item. Use the old ones setting the linkage up and swap them at the end. Mark/index all connection points with a fine tip sharpie.
