I have recently had a reason to look at the lineage of the factory 914-6 number 1543 owned by Tony Samojen and documented on Armando’s pbase 914-6 GT website. The original window sticker is shown there. It refers to this car in two places as a 914-6 “R”. No mention of GT
We talk about GT’s and M471 optioned cars, but it seems there is more significance to the R designation than the more commonly used GT designation. This particular car was special ordered through a dealership and It seems that it was intended more as a street car. Kinda like the Cayman GT 4 RS. No GT roll bar. I suspect vintage GT guru Glenn Staszak could provide more insight. |

I found further reference to the 914-6 R program in this thread
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?sho...171340&st=0 Some comments there indicate that maybe the R build program was limited to the original factory competition cars I re-read Glenn’s 000 article very carefully in light of that possibility. Sure enough there it was in a caption to a picture of the Monte Carlo rally #1 914-6 where it says that car was “the final factory 914-6 R chassis”. So there you have it, it seems the 914-6 R program covered those first 914-6 factory competition cars and then was done. The parts developed during the R program were used for the M471 option parts and the Competition Type parts that went into building the various cars that are commonly known as the 914-6 GT’s. Seems logical to me. Maybe Glenn will pipe in to confirm. |
