I bought my project car several years back - came with its original 1.7L that had been freshly rebuilt but not installed yet. I noticed this thermostat that was on it when I got it and basically ignored it til now.. it looks a little different than the originals- anyone know the specifics on it?

ah i see
is the shaft inside the spring a piston full of gas or liquid?
expands the spring when hot is that how this one works?
thus if piston fails then spring keeps flaps permanently closed?
is that the failure mode.

so this is the infamous mexican one?
which i must admit i have never seen.
only the original thermostats.

I think there would be a wax stat fitted, once the wax melts @ it collapses and the outer spring then opens it fully ? maybe the spring is bimetal to assist further don't know ?.
Believe these thermostats were used on the last of the Mexican Beetles but seem to remember the thermostats came out of Brazil originally .
