Still sorting out the 14. Got the 123 distributor in, replaced the clutch cable, refurbished the interior, a bit and now working on the engine. Found no compression on #1 cylinder. Car still ran pretty well and was quick compared to other stock 2.0’s I’d driven. Dropped the engine and found #1 exhaust valve had a couple of bites taken out of it!
In the process of dealing with that. Also found the valve covers could use changing as they’re pretty beat up. Are stock covers the best bet? Searched for new ones but have only found used. There are the ones on the Type 4 site but $800.00 is not going to happen. How about the ones that attach with through bolts? Any experience with how they seal? Here’s a pic of the exhaust valve. As always, appreciate the input. Thanks, Tony |

So far as valve covers, stock are fine. I have always used sealant on both sides of a cork gasket and never saw a leak. |

Just doing the top end. Cylinders look nice. Will replace the exhaust valves, clean all the seats and put it back together. Ordered a set of stock valve covers. I've had a couple of 912E's and many 912's and only had leaking when I used silicon gaskets on the 912E. Sucked it right off the cover. They couldn't be glued down and made a mess of things. I usually dab some glue in a few spots, let it sit for the night and install.

I cannot recall the threads, but do a bit of poking around. My 2056 build I did not use them, 15k miles and two years later she runs great. |
