I would agree the 914 in general was what inspired the 986. Not so much as a mid-engine 911 track killer (Auto manufacturers don't like to outdo their own flag ship cars). More as an entry level model. Porsche had a price point gap to fill once models like the 944 went away.

Had a few 986's over the years and liked them all. Always wound up selling them off. Never really embraced the convertible. Live in the PNW, not much out of the year you can utilize the soft top. The Cayman, now there's another mid-engine Porsche I can get behind!

Edit: Knowing someone is going to say "NO! It was the 550 that inspired the 986!" Possibly in the concept Boxster, but certainly not in the production 986.
