Waaaaaaay back when they first announced an entry-level car, I speculated (mostly hoped!) that they would use the existing VW GTI drivetrain, just moving it back behind the passenger compartment... That was my personal wish for a new 914. The drivetrain engineering was completely done, and the fact that there were an awful lot of Golf-chassis cars being made would help keep costs down pretty well. And, of course, another collab with VW!

But my vision for a new 914 was never to be, of course.
