I had read that Porsche went out and bought a used 4 cylinder 914 to use as the test mule for the development of the 986. They rebuilt the chassis, and refurbished the interior so it was like new. Then they grafted in the prototype 986 front and rear suspension, and later the engine and transmission. That way they could take it out and drive it on the road and it would be "just another 914", hiding in plain site.

I don't know if this is an absolute truth, or just some rumor. But the fact that the wheelbase is the same between the 986 and the 914 may re-enforce this belief.
