Neat article, thanks for sharing.
I would agree the 914 in general was what inspired the 986. Not so much as a mid-engine 911 track killer (Auto manufacturers don't like to outdo their own flag ship cars). More as an entry level model. Porsche had a price point gap to fill once models like the 944 went away. Had a few 986's over the years and liked them all. Always wound up selling them off. Never really embraced the convertible. Live in the PNW, not much out of the year you can utilize the soft top. The Cayman, now there's another mid-engine Porsche I can get behind! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) Edit: Knowing someone is going to say "NO! It was the 550 that inspired the 986!" Possibly in the concept Boxster, but certainly not in the production 986. |

It was the 550 that inspired the 986!" Possibly in the concept Boxster, but certainly not in the production 986. When the new 1997 Boxster sales campaign was going strong in Magazines, TV ; Porsche was pushing the strong pedigree link to their 550. Never a mention to the mid-engine entry level 914 lineage. I was like...what ¿ huh ? But marketing liked the image of that 550, James Dean, most important USA being a very strong market for the brand. While the 986 was going through prototyping, the Factory even gave out special Tee shirts to the staff, which featured an American football and the BOXSTER font printed on the grey tee. I was lucky to get one from a friend that worked in the plant. The 986 proved to be a money maker for the brand, even though the first year were problematic with engines hydraulic locking.
