I am futzing around with a warning light that is permanently on--not blinking. Parking brake switch seems to be working but will put a new one in shortly and then move down to MC to check it out. Prior responses to this query had many blinking light comments but my light has never blinked. Is this an issue or part of the problem?

Also best source for wiring diagram for 1971 914 and best manual for general knowledge? I hate haynes manual style.

Most likely part of the problem.

Many of these cars have wiring “modifications” that deviate from how they left the factory. There are all sorts of “custom” work that is shown in various threads on this forum that include electrical tape, wires simply twisted together, or wire nuts, and other hackery. YRVM.

One question would be whether or not your turn signals flash properly? The same relay is used to flash the turn signals as well as the brake warning lamp.

Another would be whether your brake warning indicator (ie gauge bulb) is incandescent or has it been swapped to a LED?

Agree with comment above - 1st quick check would be to make sure you don’t have brake fluid leaking from the master cylinder into the pedal area. This is a very common failure for 50 year old master cylinders. This can either be done easily with a boreoscope or by removing the pedal board and visually inspecting.
