I have a complete running 99 Boxster 5spd with a quarter million miles on it.
It's roachy enough to turn into an "Organ Donor". I'm a sucker for 4 valve, modern digital FI, COP, and modern accessories. I look at the Boxster and think "Wonder if I can fit that in the 914?". I think it might be possible. After conversion I would most likely replace it with a Boxster S or maybe even a 911 engine. The drive package I'd rather use is a Boxster/Cayman S with the six speed but I own the 2.5L 5 speed now. There is a good chance I can part the 986 out and make money as it came with a factory hardtop. I want to "vulture" the calipers anyway. Are the water-cooled sixes dimensionally identical externally? Have others tried before? I did find this. At least one has been done! https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-914...conversion.html |

As a self anointed air cooled enthusiast, ya’ all just keep finding new ways to destroy 914’s (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif) And I wouldn't if there was an economical, reliable method of achieving 300whp out of a T4. If there was an economical path to 200, I'd have probably chosen it on my nice 75 and left the chassis "stockish"... IMO if you're spending more than 10K you SHOULD receive more than 120hp... The Boxster swap would be very budget friendly as I own it now. I expect to spend less than 10K going LGX and Bosxter 6. I'm just not sure if that will work and it looks like others have been successful with the modern Porsche 6. One benefit of the Porsche swap is "Staying in the family". AFAIAC the Boxster IS the 914's descendent. |

AFAIAC the Boxster IS the 914's descendent. I got lucky, there was a small window right around 2005-ish where air-cooled 3.6L engines and related swap parts were still affordable. I paid $7500 for the engine, headers and mufflers, a box full of PMS conversion parts and an already flipped 915. These days, i would have to take out a 2nd mortgage on the house if i wanted to do that swap (or blow up the engine). (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) |
