The OP got an answer on FB. Here is Raby's comment:
"This crankcase is from an engine originally fitted with hydraulic lifters. This is not a 914 case, it is either a VW bus case with the code of GE (or maybe a rare late GD case) or it was sold as a universal case in the 1980s from VW. I can't see pics of the breather chimney, so I can't tell if has an enclosed chimney from a Vanagon (CV case code). The important part of this engine is it must use the proper (short) oil pick up tube which was never 914 equipment. The passageway is how the oil returns from the oil pressure relief bypass. With hydro lifters this bypass oil was to be instantly recirculated to keep the lifters pumped up during the bypass period." |
