Can some one tell me what the over all length (inches) of the forward shift rod for a 73 and later 914 is suppose to be ? I have a forward shift rod that measures 28 1/4 inches total. it is straight and is splined on one end and smooth on the other end. I t doesn't look anything like my 71 front shifter rod. Is it the right length for a side shifter front rod?

Can you post a picture of the rod you have?
The early and late front shift rods are different. The late front shift rod is 31" long. The diameter of the late rod is smaller.
Does it fit the firewall bushing? If so it is correct. If it is too large it may be an early rod.
