My speedometer works fine, but the odometer stopped working. Should I try to repair or replace it? I haven't done any research yet, so I'm not certain what it would cost
Any thoughts? BTW. 1975 2.0L.

There seem to be 2 different but related reasons that the odometer stops working, even though the speedometer still works. The first is that the main drive gear inside the speedometer is no longer tightly fastened to the metal shaft it is pressed onto. Pelican Parts has a tutorial on how to fix a loose speedometer drive gear.

The second problem that I have experienced on at least three (3) speedometers is that the pot metal pedestal inside the speedometer body that supports the metal shaft the drive gear is attached onto gets worn oval. The ovality in the support pedestal allows the shaft to move far enough that the drive gear no longer makes constant mesh contact with the geared number drums which record the total miles driven. The only fix for this second type of problem is to look for a good working used speedometer or to send your speedometer away to a speedometer repair shop.
