For the less mechanically inclined, I would suggest running the rebuild request past a local high-quality rebuild shop. I have had great luck with California Rebuilt Exchange (CRE) in Ontario and Moreno Valley. They do top shelf work and rebuild your factory part and don't just exchange it for something they have on the shelf. I've used them for a bunch of Land Cruiser and Chevy parts and have been super happy with them. No rack problems in my 914 (I got 99 problems, but the rack ain't one) but when I need it done in the future, I wouldn't hesitate to have them do it.

Worth an ask.
