A while back, I asked about how hot a 914 should run on a VDO gage with no numbers. Responses said, I need to look at the sender to see if it matches the gage. I had a chance to get the sender out so here it is.
After a high reving drive on a warm day, the temp went close to the red zone. Maybe a needle or twos width to the red. Do I have a matching gage with sender? Thanks! |

I just checked my gauge and it matches the sender according to the diagram. So, my car, if your drive it briskly, is running at around 280 C. Maybe, a longer drive, it would keep going into the red. I don't know.
Why is my engine running so warm? It's very clean, no crude blocking anything, new carbs, fresh oil. All tins in place. Thanks for the responses. |

Why is my engine running so warm? It's very clean, no crude blocking anything, new carbs, fresh oil. All tins in place. Let’s start with the principle that if it’s not in the red, it’s not too warm. If you’re running it extremely hard, it’s gonna’ run warm. That is just the way air cooling works. Trying to make an aircooled engine run at water pumper temps is a fools errand. You don’t include any specifics like temperature, grade, loads, how long it takes to do this etc., so it’s hard to judge if you have a valid concern. Now to your specifics: There are a ton of reasons why it might be trending towards the red and actually into the red. What you’re not mentioning is what happens when you back off and drive normally? Does it cool back down reasonably quickly? Where does it run when driving normally? Without knowing what your CHTs are it’s hard to know what is driving your oil temps. CHT leads oil temp. But even with good CHT oil can still run hot due to: Oversized oil pump pumping too much volume and forcing the pressure relief valve to open and bypass the oil cooler Stuck pressure relief valve Oil viscosity too high - again can open relief valve and bypass the oil cooler. Flaps - has some DAPO removed your flaps? Is the flap on the 3/4 side properly connected? Thermostat - is your thermostat adjusted properly. See graphic Crap on top of the oil cooler - how do you know it’s clean and open and not plugged up with leaves, cottonwood fluff, grease & dirt? Did you actually inspect? Engine tuning way off; mixture timing, etc Fan impeller blocked - did you look to see that the fan isn’t blocked? Less likely: Rodent nests under tin Bad sender - wiring problems. ![]() |
