A while back, I asked about how hot a 914 should run on a VDO gage with no numbers. Responses said, I need to look at the sender to see if it matches the gage. I had a chance to get the sender out so here it is.
After a high reving drive on a warm day, the temp went close to the red zone. Maybe a needle or twos width to the red. Do I have a matching gage with sender? Thanks! |

I just checked my gauge and it matches the sender according to the diagram. So, my car, if your drive it briskly, is running at around 280 C. Maybe, a longer drive, it would keep going into the red. I don't know.
Why is my engine running so warm? It's very clean, no crude blocking anything, new carbs, fresh oil. All tins in place. Thanks for the responses. |

So, my car, if your drive it briskly, is running at around 280 C. No that would be 280F (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) was about to comment on that ,280c is meltdown temp ,however 280F is hardly cool says me who has never has a T4 914 lol. My smallbore six runs a hell of a lot cooler that that with a tested 911 combo gauge ,my highest reading in hot summer is just under 220F so would expect a t4 would be happy in that range ,or slightly higher Lots of outside influences and questions also ; Is the thermostat opening fully ,some when damaged or faulty don't , is the cable adjusted properly , are the cooling flaps working properly or bent and or sticking up on worn pivot bushes, oil cooler inlet blocked with crap (as mentioned ), wrong oil grade used , timing over advanced, blocked cooling fan ,not common but happens , 50yr old VDO gauge ,they are a quality brand but don't last for ever , lean fuel mixture on main jets ,if FI vacuum leaks . Sure there are more but worth checking the above ,cheers . |
