A while back, I asked about how hot a 914 should run on a VDO gage with no numbers. Responses said, I need to look at the sender to see if it matches the gage. I had a chance to get the sender out so here it is.
After a high reving drive on a warm day, the temp went close to the red zone. Maybe a needle or twos width to the red. Do I have a matching gage with sender? Thanks! |

Looks like there are quite a few things that lead to hotter running. A few things that it could be on mine, I believe would be, oil is to heavy of a weight. I believe I have 10wx40. I thought, maybe the flapper valves were always closed but I have them as always open. Diagram of the flappers confirms. I've had the engine out of the car a few times and torn down to the cases and cylinders. So "almost" all apart, tins, heads, intake, trans. Everything is "very" clean, so I don't believe anything is plugged. CHT is disconnected sine I went to carbs. After the quick drive, I did a slow drive home (about 3 miles) and the temp stayed the same and didn't seem to drop much if at all.
I think I'll try an oil change first, maybe to 30w and see if that helps. Also, maybe could be mixture too lean. Sometimes coughs a little out intake which I believe is lean. Brand new Enki carbs and installed by a self-proclaimed Type4 expert. I'll take a closer look at some of these suggestions, when I get a chance. Thanks to all for your knowledge. |

After the quick drive, I did a slow drive home (about 3 miles) and the temp stayed the same and didn't seem to drop much if at all. Example of details matter. Quick drive - what does this mean? How far, how long were hills involved? What RPM’s? There is no way oil should be anywhere near 280F in a 3 mile drive. Slow drive - what was slow? vehicle speed or engine RPM? These engines are aircooled by a crank driven fan. So driving slow, lugging the engine isn’t going to help cool it at all. Not saying this is what you did but why the details matter. Again not trying to victim blame, there just aren’t enough details in the thread to be more helpful to you. |
