A while back, I asked about how hot a 914 should run on a VDO gage with no numbers. Responses said, I need to look at the sender to see if it matches the gage. I had a chance to get the sender out so here it is.
After a high reving drive on a warm day, the temp went close to the red zone. Maybe a needle or twos width to the red.
Do I have a matching gage with sender?
Thanks!

Today's update: I'll try and add more detail. I took out a spark plug, and it appeared, to me, as within normal range. Maybe slightly rich. I followed up with a drive and I was incorrect before about puffing out the intake. It's actually puffing out the exhaust so maybe too rich.
The drive the other day was about 20 minutes, and many shifts were close to redline. Temp in mid 80's and mostly level roads. Temp got close to the red, so it was a 3-mile drive home, a handful of red lights and I shifted maybe in the 3k area and tried to keep it in a taller gear thinking, slower engine speed, more outside air going over the engine.
Today was a test drive. All flat roads, shifting between 3k to 4.5k rpm's. A few quick little accelerations but long flat straightaways in 4th and 5th gear around 3k steady rpm's. Temp still crept up very close to the red. I pulled over and let it idle for maybe 5 minutes with not much change. If I shifted at higher rpm's or lower, it didn't seem to make much difference. Total drive was 35 to 40 minutes. I did notice, when I turned the headlights on, the temp pegged to red. And, the voltmeter went to zero (wasn't working right anyway). Unrelated, I'm sure. I don't have oil pressure gauge so no idea.
I'll do a compression test in the next day or so. I was in the process of selling it but I want this resolved first and wasn't planning on spending more $$.
Thank you and updates soon...

Plug color looks great, have you confirmed the actual oil temperature? or using the factory gauge only
