A while back, I asked about how hot a 914 should run on a VDO gage with no numbers. Responses said, I need to look at the sender to see if it matches the gage. I had a chance to get the sender out so here it is.
After a high reving drive on a warm day, the temp went close to the red zone. Maybe a needle or twos width to the red. Do I have a matching gage with sender? Thanks! |

Last Update, finally: I ordered a laser temp gauge and it arrived yesterday. Went for a drive today, gauge in the car, again shows very hot. Got my laser, pointed it at the case, on the smooth area just above the fins and I got 176 F. The gauge in the car was showing closer to the original 280F.
So, I'll be ordering a temp sensor, and I believe, that should solve it. Again, Thanks for all the responses. I know a few of you had suggested that and looks you are correct. |

Temp sender won't cure the real issue..start from the basics ,for instance grab the end of the dipstick and see if it really hot to touch (old method) ,did you check the oil pressure relief valves as suggested ,reckon the main valve could be stuck closed . My last T4 full top end rebuild revealed a stuck main oil relief piston ,got it freed up and polished the piston lightly ,flushed out the gallery and pretty obvious there was crap in there causing it stick ,end result was great oil pressure cold/hot and good running temp. I don't agree about trying to sell the car like this as after all the great work you have done ,any running issue will diminish the value IF someone will buy it like that ??. Anyway good luck , cheers. |
