I converted a 4 to 6 in a 71. I also have a short shifter and the necessary spacer installed. The shift rod in the tunnel is scraping a gusset and causing a loud squeaking when put in reverse or 1st and slightly less squeak sound going into 4th and 5th. I have a video taken in the tunnel showing how it's interfering with the shift rod. Has anyone else had this issue and have a solution other than drilling a hole with a hole saw on the top of the tunnel and grinding some of the gusset for clearance? Thanks

The tail shifter tunnel rod was suported by the rear and front bushing. In its function the rod was rotating on its axis and sliding back and forth (no lateral movement).

The side shiter tunnel rod actually moves left and right at the shifter and pivots in the rear bushing (like a spherical bushing). To allow this left and right motion, the tunnel partial bulkhead through which the rod goes through was enlarged in 73 to allow its lateral movement. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to access that bulkhead to elarge it on the 70-72 cars.

I guess the rod bending trick is the easiest solution. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
