Curious as to what you all might be doing for gearing on the autox course.

I have a 2056 with what I imagine is a stock gearbox.

We autox at the Tire Rack so the course is not exceptionally big or long , but I find myself needing 3rd gear but it usually isn't enough time to warrant makin g the shift due to needing to go back down to 2nd. However it feels like I would be running at the redline in 2nd for too long as well.

Is it common to experience this? Is there a longer second gear available?

I have a stock 1st and 2nd then M, S, Z for my autocross car. MANY courses with a 2056 won't be big enough for a 2-3 shift. I've actually designed this motor and the forthcoming one to go to almost 8K RPM and not explode to avoid the 2-3-2 shift on medium sized courses.

The next motor will be a high strung 2270cc which will likely use 3rd more often than what I do now...

A-HB-N-U-ZA, 4.83 final drive, 205/50-15 200TW Contis.

Warmed-over 2L 4-banger and shorter tracks like Lime Rock, Thompson, and Palmer.

1st gets me off the grid then it makes for a nice usable H-pattern 4-speed. Usually 115-ish mph at the end of these longest straights so around 5800 RPM or so. No idea how this would work at longer tracks like VIR and Watkins Glen but I bet the post-T2 Uphill at WGI would slow me down enough where it wouldn't be a problem into the Bus Stop (I'll run the engine up to 6300 or so).

So you're going to ask about that HB 2nd gear. No, I didn't buy the 904 shaft. Instead, I know someone who has the skills and talent to actually machine off the "F" gear to the OD of the splines and manually machine and file in the splines to use any 901 gear. It was a wonder to behold, watching it being done. And it works great (we should pull apart that transaxle this winter to inspect it).

I'm not going to mention the name here because this was done as a favor, and by the time it was all done on a retail level it probably would have cost as much as just buying a 904 shaft (reprods appearing to go for $1500). Plus, I'm not sure he'd want to do another one (if he does, then he'll let me know...)

But I can offer that tossing down that $1,500 really opens your opportunities. And, The Fates willing, it's a one-time purchase. - GA
