Hey there everyone, working on getting my 6 conversion going here and I was able to hook up a temp fuel system in place of my tank while I am waiting on a few parts. I wanted to get the car to idle with its new fuel pump (not yet regulated down to 3.5psi) rated at 5 PSI max. I wanted to get the carb bodies full of fuel and get some pressure into the system and as soon as the pump turned on with the ignition the carbs essentially started dumping fuel down my intakes. Almost as if there was an internal leak causing fuel to just enter their respective cylinders. I'm new to down draft webers so this confuses me. I popped the top off of one of the carbs and noticed the fuel level was extremely low in the bowls so it was not like the needle and seat were stuck or a float was stuck causing it to overfill. Kind of stumped here as these carbs are rebuilt. Really any suggestions are good here. the float level was set, the needle and seats are good and not sticking at all.
I read somewhere but not in much detail that the bowls are vented? I have these little plunger-esq things in each vent tube that I have not yet pulled out. Would that be the source of my problem? If the bowls couldn't vent its just pressurizing the changes and causing the fuel to just leak down into the engine? |

I have on order a float level vial as well as the metering tool. I should get that hopefully this week at some point and will be able to check if the level is correct. I am also getting my fuel pressure gauge and a regulator to check that potential issue off as well. Once I get those items and can confirm I am getting correct pressure as well as properly set floats I can post back here with an update on my progress to getting these to tune.
One thing I am fearful of is having an intake leak.The engine is a 1974 CIS, with the small 32mm diameter inlet ports to the head with the CIS notch. Long ago I talked with PMO and he/they suggested using a 32mm to 40mm MFI intake manifold and the gaskets for that to get the head to seal to the manifolds. When installing the manifolds I was very cautious and took care in watching if I saw anything suspect in regards to a vac. leak and I didn't see anything. When running the engine yesterday, I had that thought in my head and wanted to test I was not getting any funky vac leaks by spraying some starting fluid around the bases where that notch is on each cylinder to hear an increase in idle. While my idle slightly fluctuated probably because of pressure and poor float levels, I did not hear a change specifically related to me spraying the ports. With that being said I am still thinking worst case in all senses and hoping I don't have one even though my check suggests I do not. One thing that I thought of as well and will remedy would be to check my spark plugs and their gap. I went from stock ignition for that engine to MSD and pertronics so I might need a different plug and increased gap? I have assumingely stock plugs (Bosch) and I think I measured around .025 or so gap. Anyway, plan to update you all once I get those parts in the mail and also get some time to play with checking all the aforementioned items. |
