I replaced my MC with a new 19mm version 2 years ago and the damn thing is leaking fluid. I'll sell the car before I go through the trauma of trying to replace the evil thing again. I checked 914Rubber site to see if they still carried their version with the "easy" installation mods and they don't show it (or even the regular one). Anyone know if this has gone the way of the dodo?

Just to bookend this post. This weekend I finally got around to installing an Ate master cylinder. The 914 Rubber one that came out looked fine, but the rubber grommets showed some deterioration (slimy black grime) and possibly a bit of installation error. The key groove around the grommet was deformed a bit from not being perfectly flatly seated.
I drained the fuel tank, raised it a few inches and detached the brake fluid reservoir hoses from the res. Gaining some slack made installation of the lines in the MC much easier, but still fiddly since you need 3 hands: 1 to hold the MC, 1 to compress the grommet into the fitting with a 11 or 12mm flare wrench and 1 hand to use a small screwdriver to help seat the grommet. I used a little wipe of assembly lube which may or may not cause problems later on. The big mystery with this installation is always what happens to the grommets when you're wrestling the MC back onto the pedal rod and into place. The grommets want to unseat and are generally twisted about which creates doubts. It's been filled with brake fluid for a couple days and no leaks, so I'm going to go around and do all the bleeding tonight. |
