76 2.0 fi stock, 130k mikes
The trans shifts perfectly, but if I try to put it in 1st gear, I usually have to “get the gears spinning” w the clutch out, then in, count to 3 and it drops right in. Is that normal or an indication a syncro is out on first gear? The engine is coming out for a dead cylinder repair or rebuild, and I’m wondering if I should have the tranny rebuilt too…

I would refresh the gearbox, this is a perfect opportunity. Your mileage may vary but you can probably expect 1st and 2nd gear dog teeth, slider, and brake band. 2nd slider is shared with third gear. Dog teeth and brake bands are in the $100 range each, so you may also want to add ~$200 to replace trhe rest of 3rd stuff too if in semi good shape. Bearings can be expensive these days but may very well be in good shape.

If you box was never opened (!), make sure you measure the thickness of the gasket in between the intermediate plate and housing as this is what sets you pinion depth (as in ring and pinion) which is very important. If the box was already opened, then who knows what gasket is there and if the previous work was done accordingly. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

Shops rebuilding 901 or 915 boxes will check pinion depth, backlash, and preload as a fundamental rebuild step.

But, as mentioned, you may only need to address 1st gear too which doesn't require you to deal with the intermediate plate, just the nose cone. But you know, while in there... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)

If you plan on tackling the box yourself, make sure you get Dr. Evil's video, it is a great ressource. There are some great youtube videos too. The biggest challenge in setting the pinion depth, backlash, preload is having access to the specialized tools which are very hard to find and very expensive.
