75 914 1.8 L Jet won't crank after accidental 1st gear start, Ideas, Sugestions, Troubleshooting tips etc. appreciated Options

Went to start my 75 1.8 L Jet this AM. I accidently left it in 1st gear to start it and it lurched forward a bit. I tried to restart it and ..... nothing cranking-wise.

Turning the key, all the electrical functions are operational. Turning the key further and no crank or even a hint or cranking.

Battery is brand new and reads 12.7 Vdc, cleaned the battery terminals, checked for blown fuses, still no crank.

Any ideas, suggestions, troubleshooting tips, etc. would be appreciated.

you might have jammed the starter motor.
try rocking the car back and forwards in gear.

if that doesn't work get somebody to crank it while you are underneath with a hammer.
lie on your back and come in from the back. tap the body of the starter motor itself, while key is turned to crank. not too hard with the taps. stay well clear of solonoid and wiring.

if that does not work you might have done some damage to the s m of a more serious nature and deeper investigation will be required.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) BTDT on my Beetle in the past. A well recognized consequence of doing what you did, and sometimes just for no reason at all. Usually easily fixed by just hitting the starter firmly, but not aggressively. I used a wooden dowel held against the starter and then hit the end of it with a mallet. Never needed to have someone crank it while I did that, but that might help. Putting it in gear and rocking it can also free the gear. I suppose in the worst case you can just pull the starter, but I never had to do that.
