Tires 185 65 R15 Question: The rear camber on my rear wheels measures equal, yet when I reach up in the wheel well and try to feel the space between the tire and the side of the trunk body, it is not equal. On the driver side I can get my hand into the space up to my knuckles, but on the passenger side only to the 2nd joint of my fingers. Is the body of the trunk non-symmetrical by design, or is something else going on here? Input appreciated. Osnabruck914 |

912 on its body shell jig at karmann.
i imagine the 914 is similar since it comes after this. this 912 set up is from sometime between 65/66 and 69 when karmann was building all the USA bound 912s and some 911 body shells for porsche. (as an aside does that make those 912s/911s not a real porsche?, or the 914/6 a VW? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) ). ![]() in this particular photo i think they have dropped the body down on to a jig that fixes to key suspension points and they are check measuring key points on the upper body of the car. but to begin with the body would have been on similar base plate jigs for assembly. there were also similar rigid jigs where the full mechanicals were arranged and then moved across and lifted to mate with the bodies which were on overhead cradles. i guess all that really mattered was the key positioning points of suspension attachments in space in the XYZ co-ordinate system with some inbuilt tolerance. probably in the order of 10 to 20mm + or -. the 10 mm or so is what you can feel in your knuckles one side and only finger tips on the other. its allowed to be out by that much side to side. |
