AFAIK our cars were finished with a synthol enamel, probably one tack coat and 2 full coats. I am not interested in going base coat/clear coat and am looking forward to an original or close to the original orange peel. How is this measured (profilometer), what was the original?

TIA you are probably right. and not necessarily glasurit either. i think glasurit may have supplied the porsche factory (or BASF whoever made it) but i don't know that for sure. also it was karmann painting the cars not porsche (rueter). solvent based. a member here with a 74 saturn yellow was going through this a couple of years ago. he has been off the radar for a while but there was a topic on it. the enamel glasurit (solvent based) he found impossible to get i believe in the USA. at least officially. and i'm not sure about his luck in looking for other versions that might have been non solvent based. i don't know enough about paint to know more. one thing i have heard is that painters down here trying to get results in top end restos of 60s/70s aus muscle cars usually use an additive to knock the gloss levels back to match the appearance of that vintage paint. would not know how you get the orange peel but it can be done. its all in the hands of the painter. good luck. you need to consult a master painter to work out how you could accurately achieve a restoration finish that gets around modern enviro friendly paints. |
