I want to rebuild the alternator from my early '71 914- wondered what the options are and who have people here used?

My alternator quit during a road trip and I had it rebuilt in the nearest large city, which happened to be Scranton, PA. Needing to get home some 7 hours away, I went with whoever I found first. Turned out fine. I don't think there's a need to overthink it.
