AFAIK our cars were finished with a synthol enamel, probably one tack coat and 2 full coats. I am not interested in going base coat/clear coat and am looking forward to an original or close to the original orange peel. How is this measured (profilometer), what was the original?

I hear plasti-dip leaves a real nice orange peel if carefully applied with a roller.
Not helpful you say? Sorry couldn’t help myself (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif) At the end of the day, it’s not about the paint type and whether or not it’s baked. Surface finish is a function of so many variables (temperature, how the paint is thinned, etc., and most of all how it is applied). Trying to shoot for a particular level of orange peel is going to be quite a challenge. I’ll just share one last bit of experience - once you begin to wet sand orange peel - you’re almost fully committed to ending with a smooth finish. When you knock just the tips off orange peel, but leave the “valleys”, it looks horrendous in my opinion. At that point it doesn’t look properly painted, nor does it look properly finished out. I wish you the best in your quest.
