Fuel Tank - While It's Out Options

Is there anything that I should give attention while the fuel tank is out?

I have already:

• Rebuilt and installed steering rack
• Replaced lines to brake master cylinder
• New fuel sock / screen
• New gaskets for fuel pipes

Does the box in top center of photo, which I believe is the Fresh air inlet box, need anything and does the fuel tank need to be out to do it?


Our car is a 1970 914-6. My understanding is charcoal canister didn't appear until later.

Tips on installing the fuel hose to lines so I don't end up with a leak?

Yup, replace the felt pads that the tank rests on. Clean up where they go, repaint if necessary. Check the gas tank where it sits on the pads; they hold moisture pretty well and can promote rust pinholes in the tank in those spots.

There is a drain at the bottom of the gas hole. Make sure it is clear. There should also be a couple of pads/carpet type pieces that are glued in place. The help noises and metal to metal rubbing if the tank moves a little.

Thanks for pointing this out. I assume you're referring to the ones seen in this Auto Atlanta video? So there were three black strips? I don't see them in the parts catalog. Were they on all years -4 and -6?



I do have two white strips of felt-like material, but as I recall they went between the metal straps and the tank.
