Is there anything that I should give attention while the fuel tank is out?

I have already:
  • Rebuilt and installed steering rack
  • Replaced lines to brake master cylinder
  • New fuel sock / screen
  • New gaskets for fuel pipes

Does the box in top center of photo, which I believe is the Fresh air inlet box, need anything and does the fuel tank need to be out to do it?

Our car is a 1970 914-6. My understanding is charcoal canister didn't appear until later.

Tips on installing the fuel hose to lines so I don't end up with a leak?

Thank you.

A couple of years ago, I replaced my tank with a new Dansk tank and did everything everyone above mentioned, including the fresh air box. It's a tricky job (best if you have an extra set of hands or two), but there are a few helpful videos on YouTube and posts here on 914 world that will help.

ALSO, your wiper assembly and motor sit behind the fresh air box. That assembly is supported by a rubber foot/isolator that has a bolt running through it and it mounts to the firewall. One nut you'll be able to access from the frunk and the other you can access in the cabin (you have to pull out your speedo to best access that nut).

If that rubber foot on your wiper assembly has never been replaced, it is likely falling apart and will eventually lead to your wipers failing. Definitely inspect that foot and replace it if it looks old (while you're in there). My wipers were failing and it turned out it was the isolator rubber has disintegrated and the metal bolt then snapped.

Here's the part:
