I've been doing an economical "freshening up" of a used 2.0 engine with good compression (but unknown history) with hopes of not splitting the case for a full rebuild. I have it torn down to a short block and pulled the lifters/tappets. 4 look flat and nice, 3 are noticeably dished/concave and one is concave with some galling or pitting around the perimeter. Pics attached of one of the concave lifters and the one with the perimeter damage. Common knowledge would say that the lifters and cam are not salvageable, but I wanted to hear it from the 914World audience. Would you guys re-use these and roll the dice or pull the trigger on machine work and new components?
If the latter, anyone have recommendations for a shop in Minneapolis/St. Paul. I'd rather not use Further Performance or Auto Edge. There's a small shop named Midwest Vee that reportedly does rebuilds on air cooled. Thanks. Bryan Attached image(s) ![]() ![]() |

First, would really like to see the damage on the camshaft lobes, especially the worst one. Just curious. Please satisfy our curiosity.
You have the motor torn all the way down to the short block & you say you have the $$ to fix it right? Really, how much more/"extra" time would it take to mail the short block to European Motor Works or DPR Machine and have it done and done right? Maybe contact them and see what they say. You know it needs a cam and lifters, so that's not an "extra" cost. So, besides the machine work, you're looking at the cost of new bearings (you have a gasket kit already, right?). If the pistons/cylinders are in-spec, reuse them. Maybe new rings. What's the life expectancy of the motor in its current condition? What's the life expectancy of the motor in a restored condition? What's the life expectancy of your 914? Does the restoration cost make sense? You decide. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |
