Just reinstalled my type 4 engine back into car everything wired up as before, upon initial start engine fired right up pretty effortlessly and continued to do so after several starts starter motor kicks in and , a HiTorque IMF, it actuates solenoid and motor spins right up. After bout 1/2 dozen starts the starter only activates the solenoid but no spin. I can hear the solenoid engaging. This is an old starter but haven't had problems before the engine re-install. I removed starter and bench tested with 12 volt leads and jumper cable on solenoid and it engages and spins readily. What's going on?

Battery putting out 14 volts. Will test in car like I did bench test see if it spins up

Voltage of fully charged battery measured at the posts (not the clamps) with engine not running should be ~12.7v. A lower voltage means the battery is partially discharged, for example, a reading of ~12.3v means the battery is 50% discharged.

Your reading of 14v would make sense with engine running and is what the alternator is putting out, not the battery. More here:
