An insert for 275? What and why? Is it just rarity? Some strange one off design that no other car uses?

@chmillman

the parts page that @sixnotfour posted has a hint of information re how these things were originally packaged.

translating the terms.
it looks like when the cars were built and for i guess a period afterwards only the boges were available as an exchange kit. ie a replacement insert. and if that document is accurate only for the 4s.

the shock absorber outer part ( translation of dampferbein-aubenteil) is only listed for the 4s. however the exchange kit-boge (austauschsatz fur dampferbein - boge) is for all. which i take to be inclusive of the 6 strut but its slightly unclear.

the bilstein at that time looks like it was only installed and available as complete strut and shock absorber. shock absorber strut (dampferbein) - it is not qualified as being also in the form of an outer part like the boge is. and its only listed for the 4s.
perhaps porsche simply used the same bilstein complete strut they used on 911s if you wanted that option on the six. anyway the bilstein 914/6 option is not there when you look closely. i understand these complete struts at that time were painted all green, on 911s and on the 914/4s that ticked that option box.

the 914/6 boge strut is also listed as a complete rather than being qualified as being available as an outer part only. presumably the ratings on the boge kit were the same for the /6 as for the /4. but perhaps not? its really not made clear, other than that for sure you could do a rebuild kit on the boge 4 strut.

these days of course the "rebuild kit" is entirely available as an insert for the bilsteins and can go in the boge strut. and shock performance - you just take it as it is, same for a 4 or a 6.

and humorously the boge (at least the real one) is kaput.

but i guess the one remaining question is were the boge inserts the same for a 4 as for a 6 in damping performance terms originally. which is something to add to what @jd74914 and @Superhawk996 are asking.
