Howdy everyone!

My name is Andrés, and earlier this year I got my hands on a 1975 Porsche 914 1.8L project car. I’m new to 914World and pretty new to working on cars in general. I actually was not aware that the 914's existed until I spotted one parked on the street with a Porsche badge and had to stop to take a better look at it. I got instantly intrigued as I had never seen or heard of these before.

One thing led to another—I started reading up on 914s, watching videos, digging through forums, and as fate would have it, a 914 popped up for sale on Facebook Marketplace near me about a month later. I went to see it the next day, and despite knowing it was going to be a big project (especially for someone whose experience was basically oil changes and light maintenance), I decided to go for it.

Now I’m in it, learning as I go, trying to do things the right way, and excited to lean on this community for guidance as I bring this car back to life. I have already gotten a ton of help from some members in the community and can feel the passion everyone has for these cars.

This is definitely going outside of my comfort zone but looking forward to being challenged in a lot of areas: engine building, welding, metal repair work, interior work, etc... I’m fairly handy and detail oriented, and I really want to do the car justice but I also know how much I don’t know yet. Any feedback, advice or "dont do this" stories are also welcome.

I will do my best to keep this thread updated with the repairs I am doing to it. I am also starting an Instagram page to keep me accountable and documenting the journey. (@our914journey)

Some pictures as I picked up the car. (Has not run since 96'! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) Was sitting under a cover for a long time then moved out here for space according to the owner. Have a lot of receipts from 75' - 96'.)

And after a quick wash and back on 4 tires.

Thank you for reading!

this topic slipped by my attention.

hooray - another 1.8 rescued from desolation row. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

yeah that oil filler neck is so particular to the 1.8 in the 914.
the actual screw in cap is a built in pcv valve and flame arrestor.
as per @914rrr 's advice - treat it with delicacy.

great photo you posted by the way @914rrr .

i could ask you for some data @Aayala .
but i wonder how much still survives.
i can tell its a 49 states 75. that much is visible.

is there still any remnant of the emissions sticker on the magnesium cooling fan casting.
its a white sticker with red lettering.
and somewhere on the left or right side of upper engine tin might still be the traces of a white paint stencil three digit number. if so i believe it will say either 918 or 920.
if it says 920 it was perhaps a appearance group car with console and guages (assuming original engine which it probably is).
also i can see it was equipped with twin heater blower fan by the adapter on the blower motor in the engine bay. from what i have compiled this means its built after nov 1974.
your vin and karmann plate number would confirm that.

good on you for taking it on. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Thank you! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

And there is, seems to be still in tact at least I think that’s the picture you’re talking about it.

I don’t know if I could make out any number on the engine tin, is there anything there. Is that something I need to find for any reason? Sorry not sure what appearance group car or that means. I have a picture of the inside of the car not sure if the gauges mean anything?

thanks for posting photos. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)
yep thats an appearance group option car.
and its got the special lower top console to allow a/c under dash.
so i would say its 920 number on the engine tin.
the emission sticker confirms its a 49 state car.

here is a picture to show you what those numbers look like and gives you an idea where they are on the tin. can be either on left side or right side of engine.
Attached Image

appearance group refers to an options package that up speced the car from standard spec. included things like the console and three gauges. not sure on exactly what else was included in the package in 75. but for a 1.8 there were two variations of the engine to faciliate the temp gauge in the console. standard equipment cars did not have a temp gauge anywhere. so had no temp sensor on the sump plate with associate wiring. app group required the temp sensor sump plate. the engines were stamped with different numbers for identification on the production line. 918 for a standard soec. 920 for a app group spec, my guess is yours should have 920. but it might be hard to see these days, often battery acid splatter and resultant surface corrosion on the engine tin obliterates it if it was on the right hand side.

there is no reason you have to find this number.
i am just compiling historical data.
its always nice when a member rocks up with a 1.8 L jet.
just more info to add to the file. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)
